For your safety, and to ensure a satisfactory installation, perform all installation steps correctly in the sequence shown.

6 Installation Instructions

6.1 Scout® and Scout® Bobber Motorcycles

6.1.1 Vehicle Preparation

6.1.2 General

  1. Park motorcycle on a flat surface, fully extend kickstand, and make sure vehicle is stable.

  2. Turn key to OFF position and remove key.

6.1.3 Bobber Nacelle Removal

  1. Remove six screws A from rear of headlight nacelle. Remove and set aside headlight nacelle and two brackets .

6.1.4 Headlight Removal

Indian® Scout® Models
  1. Remove trim ring screw A. Remove headlight B and trim ring C.

Indian® Scout® Bobber Models
  1. Remove two trim ring screws A. Remove headlight B, trim ring C and rubber surround D.

6.1.5 Speedometer Removal

  1. Remove four screws A from speedometer mount B.

  2. Carefully lift speedometer mount from bike until rear connector C can be accessed. Remove connector C and remove speedometer mount B.

6.1.6 2015-2017 Indian® Scout® Models

6.1.7 Scout Stock Seat Removal

  1. Lift up on front of seat B to disengage from seat retention post A.

  2. Pull seat B up and rearward to disengage rear mount C and remove seat from bike.

6.1.8 Fuel Tank Removal

WARNING

Allow engine and exhaust to cool completely before disconnecting fuel line or removing tank. Protect fuel tank finish when removing, storing, and installing tank.

Be prepared to place the fuel tank in a secure location with a drain pan positioned to catch any fuel that may leak or drip from disconnected hoses or fittings.

  1. Lift off tank protector.

  2. Remove four screws from plate.

  3. Disconnect fuel tank vent line and fuel cap drain line fittings from rear of tank.

  4. Lift rear of tank approximately 2 in (5 cm) and disconnect fuel pump electrical connector and fuel supply line connector.

  5. Lift rear of tank and pull rearward carefully to remove.

6.2 Accessory Installation

All 2015–2017 Indian® Scout® Models

Retrofit Harness Installation (Kit P/N 2883690):

(For All 2018 Indian® Scout® Models, skip to section Speedometer Mount Replacement)

(For 2019 and Newer Indian® Scout® Sixty Models, skip to section USB Connection Installation)

  1. Move fuse box to access battery terminals. Remove and retain screw A and remove negative (-) battery cable B from battery terminal. Position cable well clear of terminal. Remove rubber cover C from positive (+) battery cable D. Remove and retain screw E and remove positive (+) battery cable. Position cable well clear of terminal.

    WARNING
    Improperly connecting or disconnecting battery cables can result in an explosion and cause serious injury or death. When disconnecting battery, always disconnect the negative (black) cable first. When reconnecting battery, always connect negative (black) cable last.

  2. Route new wiring harness 2 through two existing cable ties F. (If cable ties are missing, install new cable ties in locations shown.) Place wires so length will allow for connection to battery terminals.

  3. Connect positive (+) battery cable C and positive end of new USB wire 2. Secure using retained screw E. Torque screw to specification.

    TORQUE

    Positive (+) Battery Terminal Screw E:

    45 in-lbs (5 N·m)

  4. Connect negative (-) battery cable B and negative end of new USB wire 2. Secure using retained screw A. Torque screw to specification.

    TORQUE

    Negative (-) Battery Terminal Screw A:

    45 in-lbs (5 N·m)

  5. Continue to run wire 2 to front of vehicle. Route around fuel fitting G as shown.

  6. Route wiring 2 under upper frame H. Secure wire to main harness with cable tie 4.

  7. Route wiring 2 behind frame H and secure to existing harness K with new cable tie 4. Continue to route wire 2 behind fork J toward headlight housing.

  8. Insert wire end 2 into opening on rear of headlight housing K and pull through opening into headlight housing..

  9. Replace any cable ties that were removed during installation.

  10. Return fuse box to original position.

All 2015–2018 Indian® Scout® and Scout® Bobber Models

Speedometer Mount Replacement (P/N 2883690):
  1. Remove and retain two screws A and separate speedometer B from speedometer mount C. Discard speedometer mount C.

  2. Insert speedometer B into new speedometer mount 3 and secure with two retained screws. Torque screws to specification.

    TORQUE

    Speedometer Screw A:

    16 in-lbs (1.8 N·m)

USB Module Installation (All Models)

  1. Slide collar A off USB module 1 and hold inside speedometer mount. Insert USB module 1 through collar A until a click is heard. Make sure collar is secure.

  2. Plug speedometer connector into speedometer. Make sure USB wiring is routed properly and reinstall speedometer mount assembly B using four retained bolts C (removed in Step 1 of Speedometer Mount Removal section.) Torque bolts to specification.

    TORQUE

    Speedometer Mount Bolt C:

    22 ft-lbs (29 N·m)

Connect USB Module

All 2015–2019 Indian® Scout® and Scout® Sixty Models
  1. Plug USB module connector 1 into either newly run USB power wire 2 (All MY 2018 and Older Indian® Scout® Models) or into already present USB power cable D (2019 and newer Indian ® Scout® Sixty)

  2. Reconnect wiring in headlight assembly and reassemble headlight. Torque headlight retaining ring screw to specification.

    TORQUE

    Headlight Retaining Ring Screw:

    33 in-lbs (4 N·m)

2018 Scout Bobber Models
  1. Route USB module connector 1 into cloth cable wrap E. Plug USB module connector 1 into already present USB power cable D. Close and secure cloth wrap E.

  2. Reinstall headlight nacelle and brackets with six retained screws. Torque screws to specification.

    TORQUE

    Headlight Nacelle Bracket Screw:

    84 in-lbs (9.5 N·m)

6.3 Vehicle Reassembly

6.3.1 Fuel Tank Installation

  1. Set front of tank in place and start to rotate rear of tank downward into place leaving approximately 2 in (5 cm) of space.

  2. Connect fuel pump electrical connector and fuel supply line connector.

  3. Connect fuel tank vent line and fuel cap drain line fittings to rear of tank.

  4. Install four screws through plate and torque to specification.

    TORQUE

    Fuel Tank Mounting Screws:

    18 ft-lbs (24 N·m)

  5. Install tank protector.

6.3.2 Scout Stock Seat Installation

  1. Engage seat B to retainer post C.

  2. Press downward firmly at front edge of seat to engage stud A to seat base grommet.

  3. Pull up gently on seat to ensure complete engagement.

WARNING
If seat is not aligned in a straight-ahead position, grommet is not engaged to the stud. Ensure grommet is fully engaged to stud before operating. Failure to engage seat may result in injury or death.

6.4 Chief® Motorcycles

6.4.1 Vehicle Preparation

6.4.2 General

  1. Park motorcycle on a flat surface, fully extend kickstand, and make sure vehicle is stable.

  2. Turn key to OFF position and remove key.

6.4.3 Driver’s Seat Removal

  1. Remove screw from driver’s seat bracket.

  2. Lift up on the seat bracket and pull the seat rearward to remove.

6.4.4 Driver / Passenger Seat Removal

  1. Remove the passenger seat screw.

  2. Remove the passenger seat by lifting up on the front edge of the seat to disengage the grommet from the seat stud.

  3. Remove the seat stud and washer from the strap bracket.

  4. Remove the driver’s seat by lifting up on the seat bracket and pulling the seat rearward.

6.4.5 Fuel Tank Removal

WARNING

Allow engine and exhaust to cool completely before disconnecting fuel line or removing tank. Protect fuel tank finish when removing, storing, and installing tank.

Fuel Tank Removal Preparation
  1. Prepare a location to securely position the fuel tank with a drain pan to catch any fuel that may leak or drip from disconnected hoses or fittings.

Disconnect Fuel Line
  1. Remove three screws and coil cover.

  2. Push button on both sides of fuel fitting and disconnect fuel line from fuel rail.

    IMPORTANT
    Do not use a tool to remove fitting or damage to fitting may occur.
Fuel Tank Removal
  1. Remove screw from bracket under left hand front of tank and let bracket hang.

  2. Remove screw from bracket under right hand front of tank and let bracket hang.

  3. Rotate both fuel tank brackets downward to disconnect from isolator.

  4. Slowly lift tank and disconnect fuel pump electrical connector A.

  5. Disconnect fuel vent line B from fuel tank.

  6. Hold tank at front and rear, slide tank upward and rearward to remove.

6.5 Accessory Installation

2022 and Newer Chief® Models

  1. Remove push-pin rivet and expose wiring under wrap.

  2. Locate single connector and remove plastic cap.

  3. Remove and discard plastic sleeve from USB Module 1.

  4. Install USB Module 1 wire end into bracket and toward connector.

  5. Press USB Module 1 into place until a click is heard.

  6. Connect USB Module 1 to chassis harness connector.

  7. Install wire wrap and attach with push-pin rivet.

6.6 Vehicle Reassembly

6.6.1 Fuel Tank Installation

  1. Lower fuel tank into position. Engage rear isolators first and rotate tank down onto front isolators.

    TIP
    Use soapy water to lubricate isolators to ease installation.
  2. Connect fuel vent line B to fuel tank.

  3. Connect fuel pump electrical connector A.

  4. Rotate both fuel tank brackets upward to connect to isolator.

  5. Attach bracket with retained screw to right hand front isolator and torque to specification.

    TORQUE

    Fuel Tank Mount Fastener:

    88 in-lbs (10 N·m)

  6. Attach bracket with retained screw to left hand front isolator and torque to specification.

    TORQUE

    Fuel Tank Mount Fastener:

    88 in-lbs (10 N·m)

Connect Fuel Line
  1. Connect fuel line to fuel rail.

    IMPORTANT
    Verify fuel line is properly seated and locked in place by listening for an audible “click” when pressing into place. Pull gently on quick connector to make sure a proper connection has been made.
  2. Install coil cover and attach with three screws. Torque screws to specification.

    TORQUE

    Coil Cover Fastener:

    88 in-lbs (10 N·m)

6.6.2 Driver Seat Installation

  1. Install driver seat by inserting front tabs into place and lowering rear of seat into place.

  2. Attach driver seat with screw. Torque to specification.

    TORQUE

    Driver Seat Screw:

    13 ft-lbs (18 N·m)

6.6.3 Driver/Passenger Seat Installation

  1. Install driver seat by inserting front tabs into place and lowering rear of seat into place.

  2. Attach driver seat with stud and washer. Torque to specification.

    TORQUE

    Driver Seat Stud:

    13 ft-lbs (18 N·m)

  3. Pull strap through opening in passenger seat and lower seat onto stud.

  4. Attach passenger seat with screw. Torque screw to specification.

    TORQUE

    Passenger Seat Fastener:

    13 ft-lbs (18 N·m)
