Brake System Inspection

CAUTION
A hot brake system can cause burns. Allow the brake system and the engine to cool or wear protective gloves when inspecting the brake system.
  1. Inspect all brake hoses and connections for dampness or stains from leaking or dried fluid. Tighten any leaking connections and replace components as necessary. See the SLINGSHOT Service Manual or your authorized dealer.

  2. Check the brake pedal for excessive travel or a spongy feel.

  3. Inspect the rotor to ensure tightness to hub.

  4. Check the brake pads for wear, damage and looseness.

  5. Inspect brake discs for nicks, scratches, cracks or other damage. Clean any grease using an approved brake cleaner or alcohol.

    WARNING
Do not apply WD-40® or any petroleum product to brake discs. These types of products are flammable and may also reduce the friction between the brake pad and caliper.
  6. Inspect the brake disc pad wear surface for excessive wear. For stock rotors, change when worn to 19mm. For Brembo rotors, change when worn to 24mm.

  7. Inspect the thickness of each brake disc at four or more locations around the disc. For stock pads, change when worn to 3/50'' (1.5 mm). For Brembo pads, change when worn to 7.67 mm. If any disc is worn to the minimum thickness at the thinnest point, or if a disc is damaged, see your dealer for replacement.

  8. Check that the rotor is tightened adequately to the hub.
