NUMATIX Operation
NUMATIX - System Description
The Polaris NUMATIX Controlled CVT system offers a new level of selectable comfort and performance in off-road riding. The unique design of NUMATIX enables the Polaris XPEDITION to further optimize existing drive modes – providing greater levels of rider comfort through electronic control of the transmission ratio.
Polaris NUMATIX Controlled CVT consists of a transmission control module (TCM) and an Air Supply Unit (ASU) that includes an air compressor with regenerative dryer, air tank, and valve system. The TCM manages ratio through control of pneumatic pressure applied to the drive clutch based on continuous monitoring of vehicle motion and rider inputs. The TCM allows NUMATIX to work in tandem with electronic throttle control (ETC) to optimize the rider’s experience based on the selected drive mode. The transmission and control algorithms were designed and developed by Polaris' engineering team, leveraging deep expertise in powertrain design, controls, and off-road vehicles to ensure optimal performance and comfort across all riding conditions and driving styles.
Drive Modes
The NUMATIX Controlled CVT system in your Polaris Xpedition allows you to choose the driving experience you want through the Drive Mode switch:
-
Comfort mode: Minimizes engine speed for increased fuel economy and reduced noise.
-
Standard mode: Balanced engine speed and throttle response.
-
Sport mode: Allows maximum engine speed and throttle response for highest performance.
NUMATIX - Start-up / Warm up
The NUMATIX TCM is active as soon as the vehicle is started. If the vehicle temperature is above 32°F (0°C), the ASU will activate immediately to build air tank pressure. If the vehicle is below this temperature, the ASU will go through a warm up cycle before activating. The length of the warm up cycle is dependent on the vehicle temperature. During this time, the transmission warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster and the words "Transmission Cold" will display on the instrument cluster screen. The vehicle can be operated during the warmup cycle, but the NUMATIX system will not be active regardless of the drive mode selected. Once the warmup cycle is completed, the NUMATIX system will operate normally.
The NUMATIX ASU is equipped with a self-regenerating air dryer to manage moisture buildup within the pneumatic system. When operating in excessively humid conditions, a small amount of liquid water may be temporarily present inside the system. This water can freeze if the vehicle is later subjected to cold temperatures. If the NUMATIX system detects a frozen component after completing its warmup cycle, it will be disabled temporarily and the vehicle will operate similar to Sport drive mode.
Operation
Drive modes for best performance and noise reduction can be found in the Drive Mode Switch section of this Owner’s Manual. Excessive throttle applications from maximum to minimum throttle in repetition while in comfort or standard mode may cause the NUMATIX system to overheat, disabling the air assist portion of the NUMATIX system. When the system is disabled, the system will operate similar to sport mode, and a message will appear on the gauge cluster. The system will automatically restart once it sufficiently cools during normal operation.
Descent Control
The NUMATIX system will apply pressure to engage the belt and provide a controlled descent. To use decent control while descending a hill, lightly depress the throttle pedal while descending.
Low Speed Engagement Assist
During low speed vehicle operation in all drive modes, the NUMATIX system will modulate clutch engagement to improve vehicle low speed driving characteristics and reduce belt wear
Shutdown - Purge
Approximately 15 seconds after vehicle shut down, the air dryer in the ASU will purge air from the system. This process helps eliminate moisture from the system. The air dryer will also purge occasionally when the system is operating.
