Know Your ATV
PARENTS / SUPERVISING ADULT: POLARIS Youth ATVs are equipped with a speed control system, allowing adults to limit vehicle speed according to rider's skill and experience. More information on speed limiting functionality can be found on Speed Control and Throttle System. These units are not designed for adult use. Serious vehicle damage may occur if maximum rider weight capacity is exceeded. See the vehicle specifications section for your ATV’s weight capacity.
YOUNG OPERATORS: Before riding your new POLARIS ATV, there are important things you need to know. Safety is the most important thing to think about at all times. As the driver of the ATV, you must learn how to keep yourself, and those around you, safe while you ride.
Before an adult starts the engine for you for the first time, let's learn about the controls on your new ATV.
-
1 Engine Stop Switch: When the engine is running, press the right-side of the switch to shut the engine off quickly. Before restarting, press the left-side of the switch to the engine start position.
-
2 Horn: Press the horn button to sound the horn.
-
3 Throttle Control: Press the throttle lever with your thumb when you want your ATV to move forward. Always be sure the throttle control does not stick before you drive your ATV. Read more about this on Pre-Ride Check.
-
4 Foot Brake: The foot brake is on the right side of the ATV. Read about how to use the foot brake on Brakes.
WARNINGNever apply the foot brake without also squeezing the hand brake. Using the foot brake alone could cause you to lose control of the ATV and be seriously injured. Always take your thumb off the throttle when engaging brakes.
5 Gas Cap: The gas cap must be removed when an adult puts gas in your ATV. Never take off the gas cap. Make sure it is closed tightly.
6 Seat: Remove seat by pulling firmly upward on back edge of the seat. Slide seat backward to detach front tab from the chassis. Replace seat by re-inserting the front tab into the chassis and pressing firmly down on the back of the seat to secure the grommets. Ensure seat is properly locked in place before riding.
7 Hand Brake Lever: Squeeze the brake lever toward the handlebar to slow down or stop the ATV.
8 Tether Cord and Switch - The tether cord must always be clipped to your person and to the ATV every time you drive. If you fall off your ATV, the tether cord will pull away from the switch and the engine will stop.
9 Ignition Switch - Use the ignition switch to start your vehicle. The brake lever must be engaged in order to start the engine. You can also use this key to turn off the engine.
Let’s review the three ways to stop the engine of your ATV.
