Battery Removal / Installation

WARNING
Improperly connecting or disconnecting battery cables can result in an explosion and cause serious injury or death. When removing the battery, always disconnect the negative (black) cable first. When reinstalling the battery, always connect the negative (black) cable last.
  1. Remove the seat. See Seat Removal / Installation (1-Up Models).

  2. If equipped, disconnect the WCM connector 1 and the LF antenna connector 2.

  3. Remove the wire harness 3 from the retention feature on the cover.

  4. Remove the two cover bolts 4 and retain. Tool: 6mm Hex Socket

  5. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal screw 5 and cable. Tool: Phillips Screwdriver or 10mm Hex Socket

    TIP

Reinstall the screw into the battery after removal to capture the nut in the battery post.

  6. Remove the positive (+) jump start terminal cap 6 to aid in removal of the cover.

    TIP
Keep the positive (+) jump start terminal cap tethered to the cover so it does not get lost.
  7. Lift the battery cover up 7 and towards the rear of the motorcycle to disengage the tabs in the front. Set aside to access the battery.

  8. Disconnect the positive (+) battery screw 8, cable, and positive (+) jump start terminal 9 from the battery.

  9. Using the battery strap, pull the battery out of battery trays. Once the battery is about 1/2 – 3/4 way out, use your other hand to grab the top of the battery and remove it from the motorcycle.

    NOTICE
The battery is heavy. Take care not to drop the battery when removing or installing it. Use the battery strap to aid in reinstalling the battery.
  10. Reverse these steps to reinstall the battery.

    NOTICE
The battery strap should be used to reinstall the battery. Before you install the battery, make sure the strap is retained to the left-hand battery tray and routed through the slot in the top of the right-hand battery tray.
